JACKSONVILLE, Fla., May 30, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Web.com Group, Inc. (Nasdaq:WWWW), a leading provider of internet services and online marketing solutions for small- and medium-sized businesses, has applied to be the exclusive registry for the new ".WEB" generic top level domain (gTLD), which is part of the first wave of the newly-expanded universe of domain names being considered by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers).

The .WEB domain is widely believed to be the most important extension since .COM, as its designation is intuitively understood to be part of the internet and not constrained by narrower definitions, such as .INFO or .ORG. Virtually any entity that aspires to be on the internet would be a prospective applicant for a .WEB domain name, and it is expected to be particularly attractive to those who were not able to obtain a .COM extension for their use.

As outlined in the application, Web.com proposes to be the exclusive registry for the .WEB gTLD and has already selected a third party operator to assist with managing the Domain Name System (DNS) infrastructure.
Web.com currently offers pre-registration for the .WEB gTLD on its website and remains committed to promoting the .WEB gTLD as a new and valuable top level domain.
